Marie van Houtte

Marie van Houtte was bred by the famous nursery of Ducher (Later Pernet Ducher but today again Ducher) in 1871. From the start Marie had a lot of admirers and today she's still one of the most beloved Teas, especially in Australia.

Her parents are two of the most beautiful Teas ever: Madame de Tartas and Madame Falcot so it was written in the stars that Marie would also be a rose of great beauty.

The buds are rather pointed, white with carmine pink edges. They unfold into rather large, creamy white with pink shading flowers. They edges of the petals are often pink and once the flower is fully open a light yellow shading appears. The flowers are very double and globular. A moderate Tea fragrance adds to the beauty of this rose. Borne mostly solitary the blooms keep coming till first frost.

Marie van Houtte can reach up to 275 cm so she can be used as a small climber or pillar rose but most often she doesn't get even near that size. Her average growth is 150X100 cm or 5X4 feet. In warmer area's with very mild winters she'll reach her maximum. She forms a rounded, open shrub with the beautiful flowers nodding their heads towards us.

Zone 7b to 10b, good rain, heat and drought resistance. Give her a warm spot in full sun and I keep repeating it because it's so important: Prune very lightly or not at all, she hates it. Good as a solitary, eye-catching rose or for growing in big pots.
